TODAY IN FSU HISTORY: On January 22, 1924, the fountain in the front of the Administration Building at the Florida State College for Women froze solid. FSCW freshmen waited for this event as legend had it that the fountain would freeze over and have icicles at least once during a student’s four years at the school. A few years later, a Pinellas County native wrote that, she didn’t “care particularly whether the thing freezes or not, for a frozen fountain brings only one result—freezing weather, and being from St. Petersburg, we do not like it.” Icicles on the fountain were sometimes several feet long.
